One poster. All the feels.

Bluebird Backcountry

The Challenge

Create a design brief for the 22/23 Winter Season poster. Design this piece of merchandise so that when customers purchase it, they feel they are taking a piece of their wilderness experience home with them. Showcase some of the season’s new features in the visual art.

Design Solution

In writing this poster’s design brief, I focused heavily on the visceral sensory experience Bluebird customers know and love. I asked the artist to capture this experience in 2D through the image of a skier first clicking into bindings and gliding out under the iconic Bluebird archway to the backcountry. Key details in this image (known and beloved by backcountry enthusiasts) include glistening ski tracks, adventure-calling prayer flags, and Bear Mountain’s impressive backdrop. But we didn’t stop there. Key details also include the snowboard in the nearby rack — therefore demonstrating inclusivity for both skiers and riders — and the trusty canine sidekick, illustrating the mountain’s new dog friendly policy. The poster was designed with a black dog and a tan dog, allowing customers an endearing opportunity to have their Bluebird merch match their beloved Fido.

Outcome

The 22/23 poster was one of the top selling pieces of merchandise that winter, and was additionally used for the year’s three season pass designs. Most importantly, the purchased pieces hang in the homes of target Bluebird customers, giving them an emotionally charged tug to return to the mountain.
